WHO ARE YOU?
[ PERSONALITY ]
SOME PEOPLE HAVE CALLED RAFAEL a plush tiger and surprisingly, they’re not too far off. He’s got the fire, and he definitely has the love. Frankly, the boy’s energy can be quite contagious. Rafael just has the ability – the aptitude to reveal that whenever he plays hooky, sing, take naps, not study for upcoming tests, party it up with close friends that he is genuinely having fun. And that’s the key to him – Rafael cherishes the moments that he receives. The desire for laughs and thrills are what is behind every action Rafael performs and he wouldn't give up those moments for anything. Adventure is his game and the post-travel reward is the experience along the ride. Although this type of lifestyle does come nicely packaged with more bumps along the road than most, Rafael – almost always – never lets his misfortunes bring him down. Through Rafael's perspective, the entire world is his mountain waiting to be overtaken. Sure, maybe his laughs and kicks don’t fit perfectly in every situation, but it’s always there when it’s needed.
BUT THIS BY NO MEANS IMPLIES that Rafael’s world is all diamonds and sapphires, Rafael does struggle with his own personal demons. Although he may put up the front of being fine Rafael is insecure about, well, mostly himself. Existential crises attacks come often – not a pretty thought, trying to figure out one’s significance in life as the years pass by. The sheer idea of being completely worthless as an individual brings much instability into his life. Rafael has his own episodes of worrying way too much – he starts to desperately search around in panic for answers to his conundrums of ‘what is my life’s purpose?’, ‘is there really a higher being?’ etc. And these uncomfortable thoughts force the boy to set up his own defense mechanisms in the form of arrogance and (slightly?) sadistic urges. The more Rafael feels like he doesn’t have anything in control, the more he lashes out to prove to himself (and others) that he does. This leads to Rafael’s impulsive behaviors to jump the gun at every opportunity he gets instead of stepping back and fully digesting the situation. Betrayals become incredibly hurtful to him and he does not take malicious intent well – more often than not returning (or at least attempting to return) the favor dealt to him. And although there are certain realizations that such acts are petty, self-control is one of the less trained qualities of Rafael. Add in his desire to provide the best for his little sister while – trying – to serve as a role model for her and there you have the makings of the mess known as Rafael. Somewhere mixed in his cheerful demeanor there is a boy praying that he doesn’t screw everything up because he knows terrifyingly enough, there rarely are second chances in the world he lives in.
TO THE BELOVED FRIENDS Rafael has made, however, it isn't hard to see how much effort he puts into keeping the healthy bond running. He would go leaps and bounds for them — sending lighthearted ‘i luv u’ cards during Valentine's Day, inviting them over to his annual animated movie marathons, push back obligations if they were to ever need someone to rant to. If one were to ever get hurt, everyone else can expect Rafael to get involved a few short moments later. Simply put, Rafael cherishes his close friends to a point where it can ultimately add to his rash tendencies. He places his absolute trust and life in the hands of his closest of friends.
AFTER THE PARTY AND DRINKS Rafael continues to live his own life to the fullest. He enjoys being able to make his own decisions and reap his own spoils, despite the dangers that lie underneath. Most argue that he is a loose cannon, a bomb just waiting to explode. But Rafael pays no heed. Because no matter how shameless he might look to others, no matter how revolting his actions might be to the absolute refined; Rafael will absolutely do anything necessary to find his place in and around this world.

WAY BACK WHEN...
[ HISTORY ]
Rafael, the successor. “You will stand on top of the world…” his mother would whisper into his adolescent self as he slowly sank into slumber. For as long as Rafael could remember, he was told that he was destined for greatness. Many kids would revel in the praise of their own mother, cheekily agree and truly believe that their future would ascend even the heavens themselves. However, Rafael was different from those kids. The only future he recognized was bleak, lifeless – and he abhorred it.
If one had to describe how Rafael was brought up the word ‘polished’ would come into mind. According to his parents, only the best-of-the-best private tutors were meant for the boy. It was an expectation for him to understand the intricacies of subjects that become the topic of intelligible discussion such as modern day politics, music, magic, and various sciences. Under the rigid rule Rafael was guided into becoming the ‘model prince’, the prospect that would become the best husband for any pureblood family willing to merge with the Diaz bloodline. Chin up, straight back, elegant strides – “always greet them with that winning smile” were only a few of the policies the boy had to follow.
He couldn’t do anything about it. Rafael had tried multiple times – defiance, tantrums, yelling. But the result was always the same – punishment. He didn’t want to be a statue etched into the ‘perfect boy’ that his parents desired, he just wanted to be ‘free’. The boy wanted to just play with the rest of the kids in town, to mingle, to smile – to laugh. Rafael just wanted to be himself. But the lessons kept on piling up and the outside world became his parents’ bargaining chip for obedience. Somewhere inside of him, this realization that his life was just waiting to be given away to further his family’s wealth angered and confused him greatly. Somewhere inside of him Rafael realized he was just a paycheck, an investment just waiting to be cashed in. Every day Rafael swore he could hear it – the whispers that plagued the house: “we need more money…”, “we need more power”, “we must be more presentable to the rest…”
The angel. Rafael wanted to leave, he would dream about running away. But he wanted to stay for her, the only light that shone through his dark days and silenced the whispers of the house. This light was his own personal savior – his sister, Eryka. Despite being younger, she seemed to be the more level-headed sibling. She always knew what to do and they would console each other whenever it was needed. The constant days spent together reading old folk tales helped Rafael bear the stress-filled hours experienced beforehand. Their fantasy of being world renowned quidditch players revitalized Rafael’s motivation to continue his studies. While the outside world became more and more of an afterthought, their bond strengthened.
Their times together became more than just moments for Rafael. She offered companionship in his times of need, when not even his parents bothered to pay attention to his problems. On Rafael’s tenth birthday, he promised Eryka that he would place her before anyone else in the world – she was his only true ‘family’.
The promise. At the age of eleven Rafael left for his new chapter at Hogwarts. The whispers had followed him – reminding him that his true purpose is just around the bend. But Rafael stuffs it in the back of his mind.
Hogwarts allowed Rafael to fully experience life without the control of his parents. It became the only place where he could be away from the grasps of being ‘perfect’ and away from all the responsibilities that ruled his life back at home. By simply being ‘free’ Rafael was able to explore the different paths of his youth. At this age the boy realized that his own desires conflicted with that of his parents. He never really wanted to be sold-off into another family just for money. His years at Hogwarts was the time for Rafael to be himself. The idea of a lavish life escaped his own mind and was replaced with all the excitements of being surrounded by peers like himself. For the first time in his life, Rafael felt free.
Sixteen, Fifth year, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Years have passed since Rafael’s first banquet at Hogwarts. It has been quite the adventure for him, a dream come true in many ways. He’s found his place within the walls of the school – a consistent quidditch player, aspiring vocalist/musician, and notoriously known for being an avid party-goer. Who knows, maybe he’ll be able to put the past behind him – someday.
