Raven has had this ability since she first showed signs of magic. To be honest it was the first sign she could use magic. It is a family trait that had skipped many generations. Basically she can speak to snakes and it just sounds like hissing. Half the time she doesn't know the difference. To her snakes sound just like everyone else but to others she is hissing when replying back to the snake.
WHO ARE YOU?
[ PERSONALITY ]
Some Families Can have Negative Effect: Raven is a product of a very strict upbringing. This has had numerous effects on the girl. On the outside she has this stereotypical pure blood air about her. She can seem snotty and have this better that everyone else air about her. She holds herself high and seems to look down on everyone because that is how she was conditioned. Never show weakness, always stand tall. You are better than they are. Don't disgrace the family name. Those thoughts always seem to go through her head like a poison. She could say she hated it but Raven has a hard time not acting on such a manor. She is very nit picky about her appearance, her work and just about everything she does. What she was taught wasn't necessarily the right thing but it was the only thing. She does not believe that just because she is a pure blood that she is better that doesn't mean she doesn't strive to be the best. Raven is very competitive by nature however never makes a spectacle of it. Because of her family she is hesitant to do anything for another or in general if it doesn't help her out in any way.
There is always a silver lining: Because of her family she always tries her best to be the best, or at least the best she can be. Because of this she is usually one of the heads of her class and is always trying to learn more. She is highly loyal to those she considers friends even if she doesn't always act it. She will act if someone she cares about is hurt or needs her help. She also won't let anyone get away with hurting her or someone she cares for. Raven is cunning, analytical and always things things through. She is hesitant to dive into anything without first thinking things over.
There is always a secret: No matter how confident she seems on the outside she can be a true nervous wreck on the inside. She tends to worry too much about what people think of her. Well more of what her family might hear. To be honest she fears her family mainly because she doesn't follow their ideals. However, she doesn't know if she can openly defy them. She tries to make sure she is seen in a certain way as to not anger her family. Being the eldest she also has the pressure of being the next head of the family. She hates all the pressure. She does love power though. She loves being apart of the strongest group or the leaders. She doesn't always have to be the head but as long as she is right up there she is good. Once she has her mind set it is very hard to steer her away and she has decided she is going to be one of the best. Top student, a social icon at school, good quidditch player, whatever it was she was going to be in the top.

WAY BACK WHEN...
[ HISTORY ]
One would thing growing up in a strict pure blood household would be hard, but Raven didn't see it that way at first. To her it was how everyday life was. Granted the wizarding world and the human world were now mingled together but her parents homed schooled Raven and her siblings with some of the best teachers and most challenging lesson structure. Any acting up or slacking behind was met with swift and harsh punishments. If every asked why they did not go to normal school the answer was always There is no way we would force our blood to suffer through the abomination that those muggles call school. Just the thought of having to walk outside and be surrounded by them is sickening. To say her family hated muggles was an understatement. In a nutshell Raven was conditioned to be the perfect heir. No matter how hard she tried when she was younger she could always see disappointment in her parents eyes.
She had been able to understand snakes as she herself was learning to speak. The family kept a pet rat snake and she loved to play with it even as a toddler. She didn't understand that her ability to talk with the snake was a sign of her magical abilities. So when her siblings showed signs of magic at the age of three her parents were ecstatic and also extremely concerned that six year old Raven had yet to exhibit signs of knowing magic (at least as far as they knew). It wasn't until one evening when Raven was outside talking to a garden snake that she was discovered. Her mother walked out into the back yard about to scold Raven for being out so late when she heard the exchange of hissing. Without warning she grabbed Raven's arm and rushed her inside to her fathers study. Raven was so frightened that she was about to be punished she was dumb founded when her parents started cheering with joy when it was discovered that Raven had been able to speak with snakes since she was little. It was Raven's happiest memory of her childhood regarding her family. She was the pride of the family. Which meant everything thing from then on out was going to be harder, stricter and more taxing on the young Raven.
As she grew older, Raven ventured out more and started to see the flaws and backwards thinking and actions of her proud family. Inside she wanted to get away but she was too afraid to do anything about her situation. Her first and only act of defiance was when it came for her to go to school. For about a hundred years the family had sent the daughters to Beauxbatons and the sons to Durmstrang. They believed Hogwarts was too tainted with muggle blood that they didn't want their children to go there. Raven had heard stories and read up on the famous Hogwarts School that she wanted to go there. She decided to confront her parents with a proposition that she would attend Hogwarts and end up on top thus showing those at the school just how powerful the Pure Bloods really were. Somehow that convinced them to let her go. She started a year later than those her age but mainly because her parents had to request that she go there instead of Beauxbatons like originally planned.
Going to Hogwarts was the change she needed. Sure she had to go home at the end of the year and she kept herself at the top but the experiences were amazing. She was now in her fifth year and her beliefs were set and opposite of her family, yet she still lacked the courage to break free of her family, her name and the past. Small steps. At Hogwarts though she is truly happy.
