It was nice out and Raven decided to do some reading under one of the trees near the lake. She liked the view and the sound of the waves from the lake on the shore were relaxing. It was one of her favorite places to read or just sit. She usually didn't take too many moments just to herself due in part to her busy schedule but also to the part where she usually worried too much to relax. Onyx rested next to the girl, soaking up some sunlight and staying warm. She rolled her eyes at the snake wishing she could be as carefree. She wouldn't be caught dead taking a nap by the lake. Maybe in the forest, less likely for anyone to spot her. Granted the whole thing was silly and she shouldn't look at things in such a way. But her parents voices still rang in her mind Don't show weakness. Even away at school they still haunted her and she was too afraid to fight it even if she didn't believe. Raven opened her book hoping to get lost in the words.

It had been pretty rainy the past few days and, at the first sight of sun, Aubri grabbed a hold of her book bag and ran outside. The sun was beating down on the damp grass reminding Aubri that her first year at Hogwarts was nearly over and the summer was closing in on them. It made her a little sad when she actually thought about it but she shrugged off the feeling. The field of grass was covered in people, it seemed. Like everyone had had the same idea of studying outside like she had. Somehow, though, the lake seemed a little less crowded so she headed that way. That is when she ran into Ravenna, a Slytherin girl Aubri had gotten close to throughout the year, "Raven!" Aubri chimed, smiling and running the rest of the way to the girl's side, "Are you studying too?" She asked sweetly, smiling at the black snake on the ground next to Raven. It had taken her a while, but she had finally gotten used the the snakey friend Raven always had with her. She set her bag in the grass carefully and sat down next to the older girl with a smile as bright as the sun.

Raven looked up at to see the first year Hufflepuff the Slytherin had taken a liking to. Or was it the other was around? Raven wasn't sure exactly how it had happened but over the course of the past year she grew very fond of the first year. She didn't exactly get along well with her real little sister. Aubri though was the exact opposite of everything Raven had grown up with. Her smiles were contagious and the young student's kindness intrigued the closed Slytherin. In a sense she had taken the girl under her wing, helping out with homework or just being a listening ear. It was nice to care for someone like family. 

"Yes and no. Just thought I would do some personal studding while the sun was out. What are you up to" Raven smiled, her voice warm and sweet. It was a true kindness that seemed to only show itself to the Hufflepuff.

Aubri tilted her head to the side and grinned, leaned close to look over Raven's shoulder at the book, "Whatcha reading?" She asked sweetly, sitting on her knees and looking up at the older female with cute, doe eyes that just screamed with innocence. She moved her bag in front of her in the grass so that she could dig out some note cards that Isaac had made for her to study charms. She looked at the first card. The word Wingardium Leviosa was scrawled across it in messy letters. She held it up so that Raven could see the answer side of the card and said in a reluctant, questioning, voice, "The levitation spell?" Her voice came out squeaky and uncertain. Charms were really hard...

Raven closed the book to pay more attention to the girl. Those large innocent doe eyes could melt even the coldest heart. Raven was always so fascinated at how the girl could be so kind and caring no matter what. The fact that she seemed to always have a smile was just a perplexing. She often wondered why she decided to entertain the child. If she was going to be honest with herself, Raven knew the answer. This first year, probably already heard rumors of Slytherins and maybe even of herself but that didn't stop the girl from being kind. It wasn't that fake kindness that she received from her house mates or people who were scared of her. She would do anything to make sure no one hurt Aubri. 

"Oh, just Advanced Theories of Spellcasting. Just getting in some early reading for next year" Raven smiled as she watched the girl take out some flash cards. She remembered her first year. It was easy for her since she was forced to study at home. She nodded. "Correct. Here let me help. Just remember answer with confidence. Your first guess is usually the right one so if you say it with confidence you will feel confident even in a subject that you are having a hard time with. It's my biggest secret" Raven winked at the girl as she reached her hand out offering to quiz the girl on her flash cards.

Aubri grinned when she heard she had gotten the spell right. Maybe she wasn't as bad at Charms as she originally thought she was. That was when Ravenna dropped some older student wisdom on her, "Confident is hard." Aubri said, giggling with her floating little laugh. Aubri just wasn't the kind of person who bragged about herself, or believed in herself a whole lot. Some people would say she has a low self esteem but she liked to think of it a different way. Like maybe she was giving her self-esteem to people who needed it more and gave other people confidence. She knew deep down that that was impossible, but it was still nice to imagine things that way. Looking up at Raven, Aubri lifted another note card. Lumos it said. She pursed her lips and said, in as steady a voice as she could, "Light?" Damn, it still came out sounding like a question. Guess confidence really isn't her thing.

Raven smiled "It just take practice" It had taken Raven a while to have her whole persona perfected. Granted most of that was developed before school even began but it still took time. She didn't expect the Hufflepuff to get it right off the bat but she was glad to she her try.


She nodded. "See that was better! And you got the answer correct. Here is a tip for Charms. Never did like them myself when first learning. But look at the charm, the name kind of tells you what it is. for example Wingardium Leviosa, Leviosa to levitate. Floating spell. That's what make magic so much fun there are little tricks in everything" Raven had used that trick more than once. She grew to love learning new spells when she realized that the name was usually what it was. She did like giving the girl helpful advice. She knew that Aubri was going to be a great witch one day.

Aubri grimaced and nodded, "What is that language? Like Spanish or something?" Biting her lip, she looked down at it and honestly couldn't see what Raven was talking about. To her, it was all gibberish. Some foreign language people pretended they knew how to speak hundreds of years ago. Groaning, she looked up at her friend and sighed, "Why can't the spells just be in proper English? It would make everything so much simpler!"

Raven had to laugh at Aubri's questions. She found it amusing, the charms in English. "Yeah that would be something. I can just see an opponent yelling out the charms. That would make things too easy" It would make dueling very lame for sure. Especially if you knew a spell that the opponent didn't they would be able to easily counter it because it was in English. Typical of her to think of dueling. 

Raven decided to change the topic and get back to the studding. "You are doing well so far. Now next card" Raven was still thinking about the spells being in a more understandable language. She did have to admit that she liked the words in an old language. It really showed the history of magic itself and they were using spells that were used so long ago. And back then the words were used every day.

Chewing on her lip, Aubri raised her eyebrow at the older girl and nodded, "Okay," She held up the next card. It said in loopy letters NOX. She bounced on her haunches excited for a moment before the energy died down, "I know this one!" She said in a determined voice, "I know I know this one..." She sighed and shook her head, "I know it's not for closing doors...is it?" Anyone would have been able to see the disappointment in herself she felt, not remembering the charms.

Raven focused on helping the girl. When she pulled out the Nox card Raven saw her light up. She knew the answer. Raven was silently telling the girl to be confidant. Confidence, confidence, confidence. She knew Aubri was smart, and whole heartily want her to pass her classes with flying colors. Raven was prepared to help out in any way with that. 

Raven smiled. "No you are right it is not for closing doors. You know this" Raven encouraged her to give it at shot. She wasn't going to give any hints though. She knew the only way for the girl to learn was to do it herself. It was going to take some time but believed Aubri was worth the time.
