WHO ARE YOU?
[ PERSONALITY ]
On the outside, Melanie tends to be cool, calm, and collected. Growing up in a pure blood household has taught her when it's time to turn on the charm and when to shut things out completely. This has effected the way she treats most people. If she has a use for you she can be the nicest, happiest person in the world, but if you end up on her bad side...lets just say she doesn't forget, and in most cases won't forgive.
When it comes to her professional future, she tends to be a perfectionist. The family name and business are what matters most to her at this time and she's gearing herself up to ensure that everything goes smoothly. The heir to the Thorn fortune cannot afford mistakes or to fall in to old habits such as open muggle hate. That doesn't mean she hasn't picked up at least some of her family's resentment for non pure bloods, but she tries to keep her feelings private and has even forced herself to befriend some of the muggle borns in order to prepare herself for when it's her turn to be in charge.
Melanie's friends, on the other hand, are a completely different story. She believes she needs a ton of acquaintances to help with her future plans, so she interacts with basically everyone she can. This gives off the illusion that she has an overwhelming amount of friends, but in reality she only has a handful of people she truly trusts and cares for.
Underneath all of the confidence and drive, Melanie actually suffers from anxiety and bouts of depression. The pressure to succeed and be the perfect heir some times gets the best of her. Only her closest friends know about this. It's her hardest kept secret. She also has issues with feeling abandoned or inadequate stemming from an absentee mother and an overbearing father.

WAY BACK WHEN...
[ HISTORY ]
Once upon a time, there was a handsome prince. He married the most beautiful princess in the land, sired prosperous children, and lived happily ever after in the house he built for his heirs. The story of Alistair Thorn was passed down for generations, his line of purebred wizards spanning centuries. He became a legend, up until the time of the Dark Lord when a wayward descendant’s choices plunged the family in to darkness.
200 years after James Thorn was revealed as a death eater, the family has slowly begun to repair its crumbling reputation. Ashton Thorn married well, played his cards right, and was able to refurbish parts of the ancestral home enough to reenter society. At the urging of his wife Larissa and sister Cassandra, he began the mildly successful potions shop A Draught of Thorns in Diagon Alley. All was right in the world until his wife became pregnant for the first time.
Melanie Alessa Thorn was beautiful, even as a small child. She held all the grace and charm of her ancestors, in addition to being conditioned by her mother to be the perfect daughter she had always dreamed of. Her dresses were always pristine and her room tidy, just like mother wanted.
When she became old enough to begin primary school, her father managed to pull enough funds together to hire a tutor. Slacking off was never an options, especially when he had to work so hard to maintain the lifestyle they were leading. Rigorous study provided the results he craved and proved that a little motivation was all it took to make his daughter work wonders.
No amount of intelligence or obedience was enough to make her mother stay as Melanie found out the hard way. Her parents never divorced, but Larissa did leave the family home to live at an apartment in London, paid for by her father Stefan when Melanie was ten years old.
Larissa’s betrayal left Ashton heartbroken and infuriated, as well as a virtually single father of two young children. Where he had previously expected excellence, he now demanded perfection from his eldest child. The result left Melanie feeling isolated from both of her parents and set off a chain reaction that would shape the rest of her life. It made her strong and independent, but her parent’s choices also left her with exceptionally bad panic attacks and occasional bouts of depression. Neither her father or brother knows about this, but her Aunt Cassandra has hinted a few times that she suspects something.
The next year Melanie left her family to attend Hogwarts as family tradition dictated. Being away from her brother was hard, but the taste of freedom she acquired from escaping Ashton more than made up for it. A few years later her brother joined her which took away any remaining separation anxiety on that front.
At the beginning of her fourth year at Hogwarts she was given a gift from her father, the first she had memory of other than clothes or practical school equipment. A business idea of hers had paid off nicely, enough that her mother even came around for a few days to celebrate. The small white kitten was the most adorable thing she had ever seen and provided her with the more constant type of companionship she always wanted. Stella, as the ball of fluff was eventually named, can generally be found lounging around on Melanie’s bed or hanging out with her in the common room whenever she is there.
Though Melanie struggles to find the fine line between where her parent’s demands meet her own dreams, she has still managed to be successful at Hogwarts. Her acquaintances are numerous, her friends loyal, and her grades impeccable. The main focus of her attention lies in potions making, with muggle studies ironically following in a close second. She hopes that by learning the muggles’ secrets of mass production and industry she can take her father’s business to the next level and secure her family’s current status in the pure blood world.
