With the exams just about over Raven decided to do something risky. There was something that she really wanted but knew it was risky and she knew her parents were not going to approve. However, this was something she really wanted and she was going to do anything to get it. Even ask the one professor she was sure hated her guts. What else was she suppose to do. He was perfectly qualified and if she went to another teacher they would either turn her down or not force her to do her best. Professor Kale was the only choice. 

Raven walked to Professor Kale's office, hoping that she had caught him at a good time, and alone. She didn't need the other students finding out about what she was planing. It was personal and had nothing to do with school, family or anything else for that matter. This was something she always wanted and figured now was a better time than any to try. 

Her goal was to become an Animagus. Ridiculous notion and extremely hard to become but she was up for the challenge. She was fully willing to put in the time and effort, she just needed someone to help her. She had done some research but it was really complicated and the repercussion of doing it wrong were great. She had to get it right, so swallowing her pride she knocked on Professor Kale's office door. Professor, if you have a moment, I have a question for you" Raven stated hoping she wasn't going to be turned away.

Asher had just finished looking over the last few scrolls in the stack on his desk when a knock resounded from the door. All of his finals wrapped up that morning, so for the life of him he couldn't figure out why someone would be calling now. Then the Gaunt girl's voice reached his ears and he knew it couldn't be anything good. A few quick strides brought him to the door before he swung it open. "Yes,
Ms. Gaunt? Are you here to discuss your grade, or is this a social call?" He quipped, leaving the door open so that she could enter as he returned to the desk.

She wasn't his favorite student by a long shot, but the girl had potential should she ever decide to pursue it. Ravenna was smart, talented even, and she would make a good Auror some day if her parents didn't stand in the way. Pure bloods were funny like that for the most part. All glory, no guts.

Raven figured that Asher would ask such questions when he opened the door. Why else would she be there? She didn't care about the grade, and didn't really want to think about what transpired during the exam. That bogart was still testing her nerves. She didn't bother with social calls, wasn't close to any of the professors for that. She had to word this request correctly. It was her only shot. 

She walked into the room silently and took a seat across from his desk. Gathering her thoughts she came up with what she wanted to say. "Neither really. I need your help with something a bit off the wall" Raven started. She knew she shouldn't beat around the bush but she couldn't help but be nervous with what she was about to ask. Asking for help wasn't like her and doing things for her own desires wasn't like her either. She had to do things for the family but not for herself.

"I want to become an Animagus. I know that it is difficult and takes time. I also know I can't do it without some help and guidance. My question is will you help me?" Her voice was determined, strong and didn't waver. She looked at the Professor with a stern look. Her eyes shone with the desire of this request. There was no going back and even if he wouldn't help she was still going to go through with this. She was not going to back now that she made the request out loud. It was just still a shock that she had the gust to do it. She might put up a brave front but part of her was just a scared child.

The girl's request didn't shock him as much as it should have. She was a dedicated student and a fast learner, so why wouldn't she want to join the ranks of the elite? Very few people had learned powers like that, he himself being one of them. Animagi and legilimency were two very different things though, each almost impossible in their own way. "I'm not saying that I don't know how to do it, Ravenna, but I need you to know before this conversation goes any farther that I am not an animagus personally. Anything that I tell you would be second hand at best, experimental at worst." Why did he care though? She was just another Slytherin brat who wanted a cool party trick to show off at mommy and daddy's next party, right?

The more he thought about it, the more he realized he should say no. There were more cons than pros, and he was all about saving his own skin these days. Ravenna almost seemed desperate though and that was something he couldn't bring himself to ignore, even with as much of a terror as he tended to be. "Are you sure you don't want to go to someone else? Transfiguration would suite you better. Besides, you can't learn it properly without a reason why and I'm not the kind of person who will just take 'because I wanted to' as a proper answer. You had to know that when you came to ask though, didn't you?" He reasoned, though he still had the strange feeling that eh was going to go along with this somehow.

She knew walking in here was a risk but she needed to make it worth it. She was an excellent student, hard worker so sure it made sense for her to challenge herself. This wasn't some assignment though. This wasn't to impress her parents. This was for her own selfish reasons. Deep personal selfish reasons that she wasn't sure if she wanted to tell the professor. 

She listened to every word. She responded almost immediately. There was no hesitation in her voice, just strength. She really didn't care that he might not know exactly what it took  but it was much better than her doing it on her own. "I thought about going to a different professor honestly. However, they would have just said no. And even if one had said yes they wouldn't be able to push me to my limits like you could. I don't care if you are an animagus yourself, you still have more knowledge about it than I do" Raven took a deep breath as she thought about how to answer the professors second question.

This time she hesitated. It was just a short pause but it felt like forever. "Yes I figured you would want a good reason. I will say that my reason is selfish there is no other way to describe it. I don't want the ability for my family, if anything it would be despite my family. Ever since I was little I always wanted to transform into an animal. As I grew older the desire grew. I can't tell you exactly why, but it is something that I have to do" Her voice was small, almost a whisper for the first part but grew as she spoke. She looked the professor in the eyes with bright determined ones. When she was little she wanted to be a snake and escape with the snakes from the garden and be free. Now she wanted the power to feel that freedom and it was possible for her to gain it.

Asher raised an eyebrow, contemplating her words. There was something she wasn't telling him, but the tone wasn't malicious. If she was intending to use it for world domination, then at least he would know what her form was if he helped her find it. "I have two conditions." He started, leaning forward until his elbow rested against the hard surface of the desk. His eyes were trained on her, looking for reactions that Raven probably didn't even know existed. "First, you will register your form with the ministry as soon as the time comes, or I will be forced to turn you in." 

He took a moment to contemplate his next request, knowing it would be the one she would probably balk at the most. Standing, Asher walked to the other side of the desk to lean against it, towering over her with his arms crossed. "And second, I want you to try out the auror path. Take the classes, research the field. You have talent, promise. You could be something more than your family, even if you are a snake." Of course he was referring to the slytherin house, and she would probably know that. It wasn't a secret that he loathed all of them out of principal, but it was hard not to after being an auror for so long. Most of the genuine dark wizards he hauled in came from that house, and more than that from the pure blood families. It was statistics, pure and simple.

Conditions. That was a good sign. It meant he was willing to help her, to teach her. She was glad, relieved even. She had not issues for the first one. She had planed to register with the ministry when she gained her form. She didn't want any trouble. Raven nodded her understanding as she listened to the next condition. 


This one was different and she wasn't sure what to say at first. 
Become an Auror. To become something more that what her family expected. Sure her father was an Auror but she had never thought of what she was going to do after her seventh year. She was to take over the family and she figured she would end up having to marry. There wouldn't be time for a job let alone an Auror. The idea was tempting though. More than tempting. She had to chuckle slightly at his snake comment.

She knew he wasn't a Slytherin fan but for him to say she had talent, it meant a lot. Raven was quiet for a moment as she considered what he had said. Yes she was willing to do just about anything to become an Animagus. After a moment of thinking it over she came to a decision, one that would defiantly change thing. But it was a decision she was happy to make.

Raven looked Professor Kale in the eyes as she spoke. "I will agree to both of your conditions. I will take the classes and do the research. I don't do anything half way and the prospect of being an Auror does seem right up my alley" Raven watched the professor wondering what was going to happen next.

Good, she was showing some common sense. "Alright, now that that's settled, let's get down to business." Asher stated, shoving off of the desk and motioning for her to follow him. "You'll need several books, some that you wouldn't have had access to before now. Restricted section stuff." Well, maybe she had, but not for this. If she hadn't revealed her intentions to anyone else, then he highly doubted that was the case.

A thought occured to him as he pulled a few advanced books off of the shelf, making him pause. Setting the books down, he turned to Raven and pulled out his wand. "Alright, I know I haven't taught you this one yet, but I'm going to show you a spell that will help you determine your form, or at least prepare you for it. You're probably expecting a snake, and chances are you're right, but it's better to be safe than sorry." If she turned in to say, a Raven when she was hoping to be a snake like her precious pet, things could be interesting.

Grabbing on to his happiest memory, one of his uncle right before his untimely death at the hands of a dark wizard, Asher flicked his wand in the proper motions to produce a patronus. A large silvery wolf errupted from his wand's tip to float between himself and Raven for a moment before disappearing forever. "That spell can take time, but you'll be ready for it long before it's time to try changing shapes. It'll be at least a month so that you can do the mandrake root, but I'd say at least six months to a year to ensure that you don't have a bad reaction to the transformation." People who rushed it tended to end up in St. Mungo's for a very, very long time. Others were never quite the same, but that was NOT going to happen to Raven, not on his watch.

Raven stood and followed the professor when he motioned for her. She enjoyed reading and was itching to check out some restricted books. She wasn't about to show her eagerness for the books, but was happy that she would have something to do over the summer. Her parents wouldn't say anything about it if it meant that she was getting ahead in her studies.  

Raven was curious what the professor was about to do. Sure she wanted to become a snake and knew that one couldn't choose the form they took but getting an idea would be nice. She really hoped it was a snake. She wasn't sure how she would react if she knew she was going to be some type of bird or even a dog. She would fell better if it was some reptile. 

Raven couldn't help but look in awe at the silvery wolf. She had read up on the patronus charm but never been able to cast one. Not that she had tried recently. A good charm needed a happy memory and none of her 'happy' memories were that strong. To be honest her happiest memory happened more recently. It was kind of an intimidating thing. If she could prefect the spell over the summer it would be quite amazing in itself. Six months to a year, that wasn't too bad. She would do in in six months. 

"Alright so a month to learn the Patronus Charm while keeping a Mandrake leaf in my mouth. That seems simple enough, I could start on that right away" Raven started trailing off, mutter to herself. If she started as soon as possible then she won't have to worry about the leaf in her mouth too much at home. That would make things more convenient for her.

"Then that will be your homework. By the time you get back, I expect a working patronus and for the mandrake leaf to at least have been attempted. It's harder than it looks." Asher stated, pulling one last book off of the shelf. These would have to do for now, since the school books would be harder for her to leave with. "Read a few of these too, if you can. You're a hard study, so I'll do you a favor." Tapping his wand against the books, the spines changed to take on the properties of her texts from this year. 

"No one should question those books now. Drop yours off here and I will hold them for you, to avoid suspicion. Anything else you need to tell me, miss Gaunt? If not, I'd suggest we reconvene later this summer. Probably at the great gathering." His voice dripped with sarcasm, mostly because he hated having to attend pretty much anything with other pure bloods. Asher had a family reputation to uphold though, and it was the least he could do for his father.

Raven watched as Professor Kale rebound the books. The reading wouldn't be that hard and it would keep her occupied and her parents off her back. That was the plus side to the situation. She figured the mandrake leaf thing was going to be hard but she usually spent the summer to herself, at least when her parents weren't drilling her. She could do it and she fully intended to. She was going to give it everything she had to become an animagus by the middle of the next school year. That was her goal and she was sticking to it.

"Yes sir. If I do end up with any questions I'll send a an owl" Raven stated as she gathered up the book. She had full intention to head to the dorm and grab her other books. It wouldn't take long for her to drop the others since the Slytherin dorms were not too far away, same level and all. 

Raven rolled her eyes at the mention of the gathering. She really was dreading that event. "Yeah, the gathering" Raven was about to leave when she decided to look back at the professor. "Thank you. Really, I wasn't sure if I would be able to accomplish this by myself and honestly was expecting to be turned away. So thank you for helping me" Raven was very sincere and there was only one other time where her voice sounded such a way. This end of the year was something for the record books.

Asher was shocked by Raven's statement and took a long moment before responding. Normally he just shot off the first thing that came to mind, but this entire conversation was more delicate than the ones he was used to having with the students. None of them confided in him for anything. He was too scary, too loud, too unapproachable. Maybe that's why he hated this job so much, but he couldn't change who he was after a year for a job he would likely leave sooner rather than later.

"Don't mention it, Raven. Just be careful and don't push yourself too soon. St. Mungo's and your parents would not likely approve." In all honesty, he shouldn't be encouraging her to practice over the break at all. She needed guidance and supervision, but what was life without a little risk? Asher didn't even noticed that he had indulged in one of her nicknames until he had already finished speaking. Oh well, might as well not be a complete ass if they were going to be working together.

Raven wasn't sure how Asher was going to respond to her thanking him. She seemed to be holding her breath waiting for a response. It seemed like the statement was a shock to both of them. Raven didn't thank people often, she didn't have a need to and it wasn't always expected of her to be so sincere with something.

"No that wouldn't be ideal" Raven didn't want to end up at St Mungo's. She would have to deal with her mother constantly since the department she would be sent to her mother works. It was not an ideal situation and she would make sure that didn't happen. Raven just needed to make time to do everything over the summer. With the whole exchange thing going on she wasn't sure what to expect. 

With that Raven nodded her head in respect before walking out the door. She smiled slightly as she left. Only her family and Adults called her Ravenna. She hated it, it was so formal. It was kind of nice hearing the professor call her Raven..
