With his forth year teaching almost over, Ace decided to take a break in the teachers lounge. He loosened his tie and leaned back in one of the chairs, his feet propped up. Ace was very happy with the past year. His students were doing quite well and he didn't have much of any issues. Granted he never really had any problems. His students liked him well enough.

Ace was looking forward to giving out his exam. It was a hands on exam and was going to be tricky. He was also going to have his students work in a group. He was very happy with the design of it and if it was a success this year he would continue with it. He seemed to try out some new exam each year. The first two were some essay, last year it was more hands on and this year he decided to just throw away the whole essay idea. 

The professor was a social creature so when he heard the door open to the lounge he perked up. Someone to talk with, it was always a highlighting moment.

Asher was finally done giving that stupid exam and grading most of the essays he had been forced to read. That alone gave him reason enough to deserve some alone time, but unfortunately he still had other duties to attend to. One of them lead back to the teacher's lounge, somewhere that he frequented more out of obligation than actual social need. Most of the other professors hated his methods and him in general so why bother?

The room couldn't have been vacant when he entered, it never was. The Care of Magical Creature's professor occupied one of the seats and looking, well, happy? How could anyone be happy when they did this all of the time? If he didn't get back to his auror work soon, Asher was going to have to do something drastic to pass the time. Maybe turn one of the students in to a ferret or something.

"Hadwin." He greeted with a nod of his head, grabbing a glass off of the counter and filling it with water before finding a place on the couch across from the other man. "Shouldn't you be planning an exam or something?" It wasn't like his disdain of Slytherins didn't extend to their head of house, but even he had to admit that there wasn't anything exceptionally strange about Hadwin yet. Not as far as he knew.

Ace was used to the worn out expressions on the other professors faces. Exams were crazy for everyone. He always seemed to have a carefree air about him. There was also the fact that he would be grading as he went this year so noting extra for him. It was a nice feeling to be able to just not worry. 

Ace realized it was Asher who walked in. It didn't change his mood. If anything it made things more interesting. Ace knew about Asher's distain towards Slytherins but it seemed like he wasn't as harsh on the Professor as he was some of the students. Then again Ace never gave anyone any reason to not like him. Years of practice. He was a muggle born slytherin and even now no one knew it. He liked to keep it that way. He was well liked by his students especially the slytherin ones and didn't want to run that. 

"Good day Kale! Call me Ace, Hadwin is too formal, especially in places like this" Ace had no need to stay formal. He always went by his first name even some of his students called him Professor Ace instead of Hadwin. "Oh that, it's already done. I got really excited this year. Decided to get rid of the essays all together. Less work for me" Ace laughed at the last part. "How did your test go?"

Ace had to laugh about his comment on the essays. Sure most of the teachers required an essay. Ace did give his midterm as an essay. It was just easier that way, but the finals were different. Ace just adjusted for something that could be fun and not so tedious. "Maybe it is because you are a new teacher" Ace joked. To be honest he wondered if he could give such exams because he had been there for a few years now.  

A Bogart? Ace wished he had seen that. "One of the moments I wished technology worked here. I would have loved to see a video of that" Ace could only imagine what that was like. He would have to admit he liked Asher's guts. Pinning the students against their fears was something he would do, but bogarts were a defiance against the dark arts subject. 

"Glad to hear the students did well! That is always the important thing. I will have to say it has been a good year for my snakes. But that does mean next year they have to work even harder" Ace was really proud of his house this year. They were doing so well, sure there were some things he didn't agree with and he wasn't afraid to take points form them, he had to a few times. There were a few promising wizards and witches this generation.

Nodding, Asher found himself agreeing whole heartedly. The slytherin student's had exceeded his expectations this term, but that wasn't his place to correct. He wasn't a real teacher anyways. "Well, assuming that my replacement is a better educator than myself, I'm sure they'll be much more challenged. That is, if the headmaster finds someone in time." Defense Against the Dart Arts was supposedly a cursed position, but how hard could it be to find someone more qualified than an Auror?

"Your kids have interesting fears though, more so than the other houses. Less practical, more internal." Not that he would ever divuldge the details, even he wasn't that much of an arse. Still, it was interesting to think about. The things that scared most Snakes, tended to be themselves. The Slytherin's houses worst fears were literally inside their heads, and no one had ever told them that they could beat it if they just let go. It was almost sad, really.

Ace knew about the cursed position of Defense Against the Dark Arts. Most didn't last a year and if they did the professor was certainly gone the next. No one could stay in the position. Ace wasn't sure why. Most students seemed to like the class. "Why not stay. I mean I know it was a temporary position for you but I know there are a few students that love the class and would hate to see the tradition continue" Ace stated. He wasn't sure why he stated it but it seemed right. He also would hate to see another professor in the position. The curse needed to break. 

There was a slight pause when Asher mentioned the Slytherin's fears being internal. He nodded slowly. "Yeah I guess that is one of the few down falls of being a Slytherin. Most cases it is because of their families, the whole pure blood thing. It can also be a great strength if they learn to overcome it. With no practical fears they just have to fight their own inner demon. When that happens you have a very powerful wizard or witch that might need to be kept in check, considering the Slytherin reputation" Ace hated that many dark wizards came from Slytherin.

Granted Gryffindor and Ravenclaw produced traitors and dark wizards but Slytherin held the record. That didn't mean all Slytherins were bad. In fact a Slytherin is one of the most loyal people anyone can befriend. Once a Slytherin has your trust and you theirs, nothing will stop the Slytherin form helping out. Loyalty, cunning, and ambition. The quailties of a true Slytherin.

Asher frowned in to his drink, chugging some of it to give himself some time to think. Could he really stay here and teach forever? He'd have to give up his position as an Auror sooner or later because of it. The only reason they put up with it right now was because it was temporary and the headmaster had requested him personally. Defense Against the Dark Arts was an important class and the school couldn't affordmto have the position vacant two years in a row.

When he was a student himself, teaching had been his first career choice. He'd wanted to go for charms or even transfiguration. The studying was fun and he considered being a quidditch sponsor when the time came. That had been the plan at least. His father, uncle, and grandfathers were all aurors, so why did he need to be one?

And then a Slytherin gone bad killed his uncle and everything changed.

Asher shook his head at the thoughts and turned his attention back towards Ace. "I doubt I will. Too many bad cops, not enough good ones. We need people out in the field desperately to keep everyone safe." He reasoned, setting his cup down on the table in front of him as he spoke. "Besides. My ambitions of being a teacher full time died years ago. You can't change things like that."

There were a few bad people out there. More than a few. It was getting to be a rough time and he was glad there were Aurors out there protecting people. Going through school he never thought of becoming a teacher. He always wanted to work with magical creatures. So when he finished school he headed strait for Romania to work with the Dragons. For four years he became one of the top Dragon researchers. It was amazing but when the position opened up and he was asked to teach part of him wanted to say no. He loved working with the dragons. But something about teaching the next generation was more appealing.

"I don't know what you went through that changed your mind, so I can't relate completely. But I never saw myself teaching to be honest. I was going to stay in Romania to study Dragons for the rest of my life. Yet here I am about done with my forth year as a professor and I can't see myself leaving. The kids grow on you" Ace was lost in his own memories of his first year. Looking back he was glad he made the decision. It meant he could prepare the students for the adventures and life outside of hogwarts.

The children were a factor that Asher rarely considered. Most of them were so afraid of him that they couldn't stand it, but others...well, he had a few favorites. Raven, for one, had gotten under his skin. She had spunk for a Slytherin and talent to spare. Even Lee and Fowler weren't too bad of kids.

"I'll take your advice in to consideration. Who knows, the department may not want me back." He conceeded with a slight grin. " A few of your silly snakes might be pulling me to the dark side. That doesn't mean that I'm willing to play nice with all of you just yet." No, that would never happen. History and statistics were not on the Slytherin's side. The path behind them was so bloody and violent that he doubted it would ever be completely clear.

The ministry not wanting him back? Ace couldn't see that happening. He still would receive owls from Romania from his old coworker giving him updates or letting him know how specific dragons were doing. He had bonded to a couple and like to travel there during the summer to visit. He would go back in a heart beat if he didn't care for the kids so much.

Ace laughed when Asher mentioned some of the Slytherins converting him. "We are not all bad. Some of us have wonderful personalities" Ace was being facetious. Though his words did have some truth to them. Slytherins as a whole were looked at with caution but there were some that were good people, himself included. "You looking forward to the summer. As much as I love teaching I can't wait for the break" Ace said changing the subject.

"Agreed. I've heard of some...stirrings, out in Romania. Might be where I'm heading first. Maybe we'll see each other sooner rather then later, Hadwin." something about the words felt ominous as soon as he said them. Romania was always an interesting place to visit because of the dragons, but things could also get worse there faster than normal. Add fire breathing monsters with a maniacal wizard and you have the perfect recipe for disaster.
