she's smoke
Ever since she was a small child, Melanie had suffered from insomnia in one form or another. She couldn't sleep to save her life, especially in a house like this. It was smaller than hers, but different in ways that she couldn't fathom. The place made her restless.
One of the servants had shown her the way to a sitting room the day before, somewhere she could relax and enjoy herself during the day. Hopefully the concept applied to night time as well. Melanie didn't turn on the TV, or even the lights as she sat down on one of the sofas and pulled her knees up to her chest. This place was much better on her nerves, more generic.
The solace couldn't last for long, the door creaking open a few minutes after she finally got settled in. "Couldn't sleep either?" She mumbled in the general direction of whoever had came in to the room, though she wasn't sure who it was or why they were there.

Without the mask where will you hide
I know the truth Can’t find yourself lost in your lie. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Raven had yet head off to bed. It wasn't that she couldn't sleep it was just she couldn't find any other time to practice during the day. She and been there a week already and she was no where closer to producing a patronus. It was starting to really get to the girl. She never took this long to learn a spell. Granted this was way above her level but that didn't matter to her. No there was something else holding her back. She knew the concept of the spell but it was getting that feeling. It just wan't there. A happy memory, something strong. She couldn't find any that were strong enough.
She decided to take a break for the evening. She grabbed a water form the kitchen and headed to the sitting room. It was usually quiet and empty at this time of night. She had done alright keeping the mandrake leaf in her mouth. She usually kept it at the roof of her mouth, it was the best location. It was really difficult to start with but now that she had the hang of it, the whole thing wasn't so bad. She did read the books given to her. They were quite interesting. She had found herself reading some for a second time.
Raven heard a voice when she walked into the room. Melanie, at least that is what it sounded like. Raven breathed in and slipped back into her shell. "Haven't been to bed yet" Raven stated with very little emotion. "Sorry to bother you. This room is usually empty this late" She didn't have to apologize but it seemed like the best thing to do at the time.

"I just found it yesterday. Sorry if I'm intruding." Melanie sat up long enough to turn on the lights before returning to her position. It felt weird to be in the open this late at night, but at least she wasn't under as much stress as the last time she had been around Raven. Her spirits were much higher now and she felt more like her normal, confident self. Ashton had no hold on her here, not right now. The anxiety still had a slight hold on her at night, but it always had and always would, most likely. "Oh well, it wouldn't be a summer camp if we didnt stay up late a time or two, right?"

Without the mask where will you hide
I know the truth Can’t find yourself lost in your lie. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Raven shook her head, the girl wasn't intruding if anything it was nice to know she wasn't the only late night person in the house. She took a seat in the arm chair across form Melanie. She was used to sinking into a comfy arm chair it is why she sat in the one in the Slytherin common room. There was no such thing here. This place was not like her home. She liked the old vitcorian charm to the house, this was too modern and too muggle for her taste. She had nothing against muggles but she liked to be in a house with rich history even if that house was only built within the past two hundred years.
"No worries about it. If anything it is nice to see that the other night owl is someone I can stand to be around. Most of those here I won't bother socializing with unless it was some business or blood matter. That doesn't mean I won't be polite when they do come up to me. Which has happened numerous of times" Raven chuckled slightly at what she had said. When you are late to an event everyone whats to know why. And with her family name everyone whats to be friends. It was exhausting.
Raven had recently written to Professor Kale in the journal about her dilemma with the spell. She was cautious what she wrote to the Professor knowing that Isaac could read it as well. But that didn't stop her from asking or just telling about the camp. She didn't want to show her aggravation on the subject, but she hated to fail. Raven wondered if she could phrase it in a way that she could ask Melanie about her take on it. "Mind if I ask you a somewhat personal question? I am working on an independent study of the aspects of the patronus charm. I know my take on the aspect of the happy memory but I wanted a second opinion. How strong, or what type of happy memory would you believe would make a physical patronus?" Her voice was very analytical, giving nothing away.

"I would think they have to be pretty strong." Melanie said after a minute, thinking it over. "I tried to do it once last year with a few older students and could only get the mist every other time with my best one. Good thing we still have time for making memories, right?" Her laugh was a little lack luster, but she didn't try to dwell on the implications of not being able to make a partronus. The idea of a spell that could only work if you had been extremely happy once in your life was odd beyond reason and she didn't have time to go messing around in hopes of finding one good enough.

Without the mask where will you hide
I know the truth Can’t find yourself lost in your lie. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Raven nodded her understanding. A strong memory. That is what all the books said. Raven didn't like the answer though. How could someone measure a strong memory. Happy memories differed from person to person and based on life experience. Was it fair that someone like here who hadn't really been truly happy never produce the charm? She didn't want to believe it, wouldn't believe it. "Yes we do still have time to make memories. Memories of all kinds" Raven trailed off at the last part.
She sat in silenced for a moment. Then out of nowhere it then dawned on her. "We have been interpreting it all wrong. It is not the strongest memory of happiness. That is relative. It is a memory that still brings out raw emotion. It doesn't have to be happy exactly but a pure positive raw emotion. A memory that no matter what or who is around will bring a smile or make your chest hurt. It just can't be a painful memory. But it is the emotion behind the memory that has power" Now that she had the theory she wanted to test out her idea. However she did not want to have just said all that to fail so she was going to see what Melanie had to say on the matter first.
