The house was decked out after a summer of Pureblood boot camp. The ball room's large doors were open to the bright, summer heat and you could smell the salty ocean spray all the way up the cliff and into the glittering room. Some semblance of fireflies drifted around the room, making the diamonds of the chandeliers glitter and sparkle like fireworks, shooting rainbows across the room.
Braxton was standing on a balcony overlooking the party. A large marble staircase led from the balcony to the dance floor below, but the second floor had food and alcohol and it was hard to pull himself away from that to join the festivities below.
Holding a glass of champagne, Braxton leaned against the railing and watched his mother flit from respectable person to respectable person like a moth trying to choose which flame was going to burn them. This was probably the worst part of the summer.
